James Bester

Ceramic Sculptor

James Bester puts faces on pots. His “potheads” carry the tradition of the face jug forward — vessels made by enslaved Africans, once placed on graves as markers — reimagined as living portraits. Every face has a story.

The Artist

Faces with a story, pressed into clay

James Bester is a ceramic sculptor who puts faces on pots. Each piece is a face with a story — identity, history, and lived experience pressed into clay, fired, and set in front of you to reckon with.

The work reaches back to the face jug: vessels made by enslaved Africans, once placed as grave markers. James carries that tradition forward and turns it toward the living — his potheads are portraits, not relics. The brows furrow, the mouths open mid-sentence. These are people.

For James, the work is personal. He never much liked reading; art was easier. So he teaches the way he learned — through the work itself, one face at a time. In his own words: “I'm an artist that's trying to teach.”

His potheads come to A.M.P. Gallery this fall as part of Mental Health in a Black Box — an exhibition about what we carry, and what it takes to set it down.

“My potheads are a way for me to say, hey, this is how I view the world.”
— James Bester
